Configure ChangeMyIP SOCKS5 Proxy on macOS

Set up ChangeMyIP SOCKS5 proxies on macOS for system-wide or app-specific traffic using Network settings and command-line tools.

macOS SOCKS5 Privacy/Anonymity

Overview

This tutorial explains how to use ChangeMyIP SOCKS5 proxies on macOS. ChangeMyIP offers SOCKS5 alongside HTTP, Shadowsocks, Trojan, DNS, and WireGuard across datacenter and residential proxy types. Use the server, port, username, and password from your ChangeMyIP account. macOS can apply a SOCKS proxy to a network service, but some applications may require their own proxy configuration.

Steps

  1. Log in to ChangeMyIP and copy the SOCKS5 host, port, username, and password for your chosen location.
  2. Open System Settings > Network.
  3. Select your active network service, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and click Details.
  4. Go to the Proxies tab.
  5. Turn on SOCKS Proxy.
  6. Enter the ChangeMyIP server and port. If authentication is required, enter your ChangeMyIP username and password.
  7. Click OK and then Apply to save the changes.
  8. Test the proxy from Terminal with curl --socks5-hostname USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://ifconfig.me. Replace the placeholders with your ChangeMyIP details.
  9. If the command returns your ChangeMyIP IP, the proxy is reachable.
  10. For apps that ignore system proxy settings, open the app preferences and enter the same SOCKS5 host and port manually.
  11. To use a different location, create a new network location or switch to another ChangeMyIP endpoint.
  12. If connections fail, confirm the protocol is SOCKS5, verify the port, and check that your ChangeMyIP plan includes the selected endpoint.
