How to Configure IPRoyal Shadowsocks Proxies on macOS for Privacy

A beginner-friendly guide to setting up IPRoyal's Shadowsocks-style proxies on macOS to enhance your privacy and bypass geo-restrictions.

macOS Shadowsocks Privacy/Anonymity

Overview

Shadowsocks is a secure proxy protocol designed to circumvent internet censorship and protect your privacy. It encrypts your traffic and is less detectable than traditional VPNs in some environments. IPRoyal supports Shadowsocks-style tunneling, along with HTTP and SOCKS5, and offers residential, datacenter, and ISP proxies with a pool of 32M+ IPs. This tutorial walks you through setting up IPRoyal Shadowsocks proxies on macOS. We'll use the ShadowsocksX-NG client, a popular open-source option. The steps are vendor-neutral, so you can adapt them to other providers.

Steps

  1. Obtain Shadowsocks credentials from IPRoyal
Log in to your IPRoyal dashboard and navigate to the proxy or tunneling section. Look for Shadowsocks configuration details. You will need:

    • Server address (IP or hostname)
    • Server port
    • Password
    • Encryption method (e.g., aes-256-gcm, chacha20-ietf-poly1305)
    • Optionally, a plugin or obfuscation setting.

If you don't see Shadowsocks options, contact IPRoyal support to confirm availability, as it may be listed under a different name.

  2. Install a Shadowsocks client on macOS
Download ShadowsocksX-NG from the official GitHub releases page: https://github.com/shadowsocks/ShadowsocksX-NG/releases.
Open the downloaded .dmg file and drag the app to your Applications folder.
On first launch, you may need to grant permission in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.

  3. Add a new server configuration

    • Click the ShadowsocksX-NG icon in the menu bar and select "Servers" > "Server Preferences".
    • Click the "+" button at the bottom left to add a new server.
    • Fill in the fields:
      • Address: Your IPRoyal server address.
      • Port: The port provided.
      • Password: Your Shadowsocks password.
      • Encryption: Select the method specified by IPRoyal (e.g., aes-256-gcm).
      • Remarks: A name for this configuration (e.g., "IPRoyal").
    • Click "OK" to save.
  4. Configure proxy settings

    • In the menu bar, click the ShadowsocksX-NG icon and ensure "Turn Shadowsocks On" is checked.
    • Go to "Preferences" > "Advanced" and set the local SOCKS5 listen address and port (default is 127.0.0.1:1086). You can leave defaults unless you have conflicts.
    • Under "HTTP Proxy", you can also enable an HTTP proxy on a local port (e.g., 127.0.0.1:1087) for applications that don't support SOCKS5.
  5. Enable system-wide proxy or per-app configuration

    • ShadowsocksX-NG can set your system proxy automatically. In Preferences > "General", enable "Set as system proxy" and choose "Auto Proxy" or "Global Mode" depending on your needs.
    • Alternatively, configure individual apps (like browsers) to use the local SOCKS5 proxy at 127.0.0.1:1086.
  6. Test your connection

    • Open a terminal and run:
      curl -x socks5://127.0.0.1:1086 https://httpbin.org/ip

The response should show the IP address of your IPRoyal proxy, not your real IP.
    • You can also visit https://whatismyipaddress.com in your browser to verify.
  7. Troubleshoot common issues

    • If the connection fails, double-check your credentials and encryption method.
    • Ensure your firewall isn't blocking the ShadowsocksX-NG app.
    • Try switching the encryption method if you see errors.
    • Check IPRoyal's documentation or support for specific configuration requirements.
  8. Use responsibly and maintain privacy
Remember that while Shadowsocks encrypts your traffic to the proxy, it does not guarantee complete anonymity. Combine with other privacy practices, such as using HTTPS and avoiding logging into personal accounts. Always comply with local laws and the provider's terms of service.
