How to Use a SOCKS5 Configurator on macOS to Route Only Your Browser Through ProxyScrape
Keep system traffic on your normal connection while sending only your browser through ProxyScrape SOCKS5. This macOS guide uses a SOCKS5 configurator with per-app rules, network locations, and leak checks.
Overview
macOS allows you to set a system-wide SOCKS proxy, but that affects every app that respects the system proxy. A SOCKS5 configurator lets you route only your browser through ProxyScrape while leaving the rest of your Mac on its normal connection. This is useful for SEO monitoring, ad verification, or browsing sessions that need a different IP without disrupting video calls, backups, or system updates.
ProxyScrape offers SOCKS5 and HTTP proxies across residential, datacenter, and mobile IP types. Billing is pay-as-you-go or flat monthly, and the pool is listed at 97M+ IPs. This tutorial uses a SOCKS5 configurator app with per-app rules and covers network locations, DNS behavior, and leak checks.
When to use browser-only routing
- You want to check search results or ads from a specific location without changing your entire network.
- You need to keep system services on a stable connection while the browser uses rotating proxies.
- You are testing a web app with a different IP but do not want to proxy development tools or cloud sync.
Steps
-
Get ProxyScrape SOCKS5 credentials. From the ProxyScrape dashboard, copy the SOCKS5 host, port, username, and password for the proxy type you need (residential, datacenter, or mobile).
-
Install a macOS SOCKS5 configurator. Choose a configurator that supports per-application routing on macOS. Examples include Proxifier, ProxyCap, or a similar SOCKS5 configurator that can attach to selected apps. Install it and grant any required network permissions.
-
Create a new SOCKS5 proxy profile. In the configurator, add a proxy server:
- Protocol:
SOCKS5 - Host: your ProxyScrape host
- Port: your ProxyScrape SOCKS5 port
- Username and password: your ProxyScrape credentials
- DNS: choose “Resolve through proxy” if available
- Protocol:
-
Set up a browser-only rule. Create a rule that matches only your browser process. For example:
- Application:
Google ChromeorFirefox - Action:
Proxy via SOCKS5Leave other applications set toDirect.
- Application:
-
Configure a separate browser profile (optional but recommended). Create a dedicated browser profile for proxied browsing. This keeps cookies, extensions, and cached DNS separate from your normal profile.
# Example: launch Chrome with a separate profile directory open -na "Google Chrome" --args --user-data-dir="$HOME/.chrome-proxy-profile" --proxy-server="socks5://127.0.0.1:1080"Note: if you use the configurator’s per-app rules, you may not need the
--proxy-serverflag. Use one approach or the other. -
Use macOS network locations to switch contexts. Create a network location named “ProxyScrape” and another named “Direct”. In the ProxyScrape location, set the SOCKS proxy to
127.0.0.1and the port used by your configurator, or leave it empty if the configurator handles per-app routing. Switch locations from the Apple menu when you want to change the default behavior. -
Test the routed browser. In the proxied browser, visit an IP-check page. Confirm the IP matches ProxyScrape and the expected region.
-
Test an excluded app. Use a non-browser app to check your public IP. It should show your normal ISP IP, confirming that per-app routing is working.
-
Run DNS and WebRTC leak tests. In the proxied browser, run a DNS leak test and a WebRTC leak test. DNS should resolve through the proxy. If WebRTC exposes your local IP, disable WebRTC or use an extension to control it.
-
Validate with a command-line check. From Terminal, verify the same SOCKS5 endpoint:
curl --socks5-hostname USER:PASS@HOST:PORT https://httpbin.org/ipReplace
USER,PASS,HOST, andPORTwith your ProxyScrape credentials.
Troubleshooting
- Browser still shows the local IP. Check the configurator’s process name match. Some browsers use helper processes; add the helper to the rule.
- Pages load slowly or time out. Try a different ProxyScrape proxy type. Datacenter proxies are usually faster; residential and mobile proxies may have higher latency.
- DNS leaks. Enable proxy-side DNS in the configurator. In Firefox, set
network.proxy.socks_remote_dnstotrueinabout:config. - macOS prompts for network permissions. Approve the configurator in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Without permission, per-app routing will not work.
- The proxy stops working after a network change. Re-select the network location or restart the configurator. macOS can reset proxy settings when switching Wi-Fi networks.
Summary
A macOS SOCKS5 configurator gives you browser-only routing while the rest of your system stays direct. Configure ProxyScrape SOCKS5 credentials, add a rule for just your browser, and use a dedicated browser profile for clean cookies and DNS. Verify with IP, DNS, and WebRTC checks, and keep a separate macOS network location for quick switching. This setup is well suited to SEO monitoring and web testing where you need a different IP without proxying your whole machine.
