How to Use a SOCKS5 Configurator on Windows Without Proxifier: Route Only Selected Apps Through ProxyScrape

Proxifier is popular, but you can achieve per-app SOCKS5 routing on Windows with a lightweight SOCKS5 configurator or built-in tools. This guide uses ProxyScrape SOCKS5 endpoints and avoids global system-wide proxy changes.

Windows SOCKS5 HTTP(S)

Overview

Proxifier is a common choice for per-app SOCKS5 routing on Windows, but it is not the only option. This tutorial shows how to route only selected Windows applications through ProxyScrape SOCKS5 proxies using a portable SOCKS5 configurator, built-in Windows tools, or a local SSH dynamic port forward. The goal is to avoid changing the system-wide proxy and keep unrelated traffic on your normal connection.

ProxyScrape supports HTTP and SOCKS5 proxies across residential, datacenter, and mobile IP types. Billing is pay-as-you-go or flat monthly, and the pool is listed at 97M+ IPs. This setup works with any ProxyScrape proxy type that exposes a SOCKS5 endpoint.

Options for per-app SOCKS5 routing on Windows

Approach Best for Notes
Portable SOCKS5 configurator GUI apps, browsers, test tools Injects SOCKS5 into selected processes
ssh -D local SOCKS5 proxy CLI tools and browsers you can configure manually Requires an SSH host; does not redirect GUI apps automatically
Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) Linux tools and scripts WSL can use SOCKS5 via proxychains or environment variables

Steps

  1. Collect ProxyScrape SOCKS5 credentials. From your ProxyScrape dashboard, note the host, port, username, and password for the SOCKS5 endpoint.

  2. Download a portable SOCKS5 configurator. Choose a SOCKS5 configurator that supports Windows and per-application routing. Run it from a folder you control, so your settings stay portable.

  3. Add a SOCKS5 server profile. In the configurator, create a new proxy server:

    • Type: SOCKS5
    • Address: your ProxyScrape host
    • Port: your ProxyScrape SOCKS5 port
    • Username and password: your ProxyScrape credentials
  4. Set the resolution mode. Choose “Resolve hostnames through proxy” if the option exists. This prevents local DNS resolution and reduces DNS leaks.

  5. Add applications to the rule list. Add only the applications that should use the proxy, for example:

    • chrome.exe
    • firefox.exe
    • python.exe
    • curl.exe Leave Windows system services, update tools, and personal apps excluded.
  6. Test with a GUI app. Open the browser you added and visit an IP-check page. Confirm the IP belongs to ProxyScrape.

  7. Test from the command line. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run a request through the same SOCKS5 endpoint:

    curl.exe --socks5-hostname USER:PASS@HOST:PORT https://httpbin.org/ip

Replace USER, PASS, HOST, and PORT with your ProxyScrape credentials.

  8. Optional: create a local SOCKS5 proxy with SSH. If you prefer not to install a configurator, you can create a local SOCKS5 proxy using SSH dynamic port forwarding. This requires an SSH server you control:

    ssh -N -D 1080 user@your-ssh-host

Then configure your browser or CLI tool to use socks5://127.0.0.1:1080. Note that this does not automatically route arbitrary Windows GUI apps.

  9. Verify exclusions. Open an app that is not in the rule list and check that it still uses your normal IP. This confirms per-app routing is working and not system-wide.

Troubleshooting

  • The configurator does not intercept the app. Run the configurator as administrator. Some apps are 64-bit while the configurator is 32-bit, or vice versa.
  • Authentication fails. Check for trailing spaces in the username or password. If your password contains @ or :, URL-encode it in command-line tools.
  • DNS still resolves locally. Enable proxy-side DNS resolution in the configurator. If unavailable, use a browser that supports DNS-over-HTTPS through the proxy.
  • A selected app breaks. Some apps pin certificates or bypass proxy settings. Test with a different app or add the app’s helper processes to the rule list.
  • The IP does not rotate. ProxyScrape may be returning a sticky session. Check your plan’s session settings.

Summary

You can achieve per-app SOCKS5 routing on Windows without Proxifier by using a portable SOCKS5 configurator, a local SSH dynamic forward, or WSL. Configure the ProxyScrape SOCKS5 endpoint, add only the applications you need, and verify with both GUI and command-line tests. Keep DNS resolution inside the proxy where possible, and document which apps are included so you can reproduce the setup on other machines.
