Overview
This tutorial shows how to route Linux command-line traffic through ChangeMyIP proxies using ProxyChains-NG. ChangeMyIP supports SOCKS5, HTTP, and other protocols, and offers residential and datacenter proxies with rotating IPs. ProxyChains can send supported TCP traffic from tools like cURL, wget, and SSH through your proxy list. It does not proxy UDP traffic.
Steps
- Log in to ChangeMyIP and collect one or more proxy endpoints. Note the host, port, protocol, username, and password for each endpoint.
- Install ProxyChains-NG on Debian or Ubuntu:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install proxychains4 - Open the ProxyChains configuration file:
sudo nano /etc/proxychains4.conf - Set the proxy list type to
dynamic_chainso ProxyChains can skip dead proxies and try the next one. - Disable
proxy_dnsif you want DNS to resolve locally, or enable it if you need DNS through the proxy and your ChangeMyIP endpoint supports it. - Add your ChangeMyIP endpoints at the bottom of the file, one per line. The format is usually
socks5 HOST PORT USERNAME PASSWORDorhttp HOST PORT USERNAME PASSWORD, depending on your ProxyChains build and authentication support. - Save the file and exit.
- Test with cURL:
proxychains4 curl https://ifconfig.me - Run the command again and compare the returned IP. If you listed multiple endpoints with dynamic chaining, ProxyChains may use a different ChangeMyIP exit.
- For scripts that do not support ProxyChains, set environment variables where supported:
export ALL_PROXY=socks5h://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT - If authentication fails, confirm the username and password and check whether your ProxyChains version supports credentials inline. If not, use a local authenticating proxy or a client that supports authenticated SOCKS5.
- Verify that your target tool supports TCP. ProxyChains does not handle UDP, so some applications may not work.
