Overview
This tutorial covers a practical web scraping setup using ChangeMyIP rotating residential proxies. ChangeMyIP offers residential proxies, rotating IPs, datacenter proxies, and multiple protocols including HTTP and SOCKS5. You will use Python to send requests through ChangeMyIP and handle rotation, retries, and validation. Always review the target site's terms of service and robots.txt before scraping.
Steps
- Log in to ChangeMyIP and identify your residential proxy endpoint. If your plan includes rotating IPs, copy the rotating host and port. Otherwise, prepare a list of fixed endpoints from your account.
- Install Python dependencies:
pip install requests requests[socks] - Store your ChangeMyIP credentials in environment variables:
export CMY_HOST=your-hostexport CMY_PORT=your-portexport CMY_USER=your-usernameexport CMY_PASS=your-password - Create a Python session and configure an HTTP proxy:
proxies = {'http': f'http://{user}:{password}@{host}:{port}', 'https': f'http://{user}:{password}@{host}:{port}'} - If you prefer SOCKS5, use a
socks5h://proxy URL with the same ChangeMyIP credentials. - Send a test request to an IP-check endpoint and confirm the IP belongs to ChangeMyIP.
- For rotation, use the rotating ChangeMyIP endpoint if available, or cycle through your fixed endpoints. Rebuild the proxy URL for each request.
- Add timeouts, retries, and exponential backoff. Treat HTTP 407, 429, and 5xx responses as signals to slow down or switch endpoints.
- Set normal browser-like headers only when appropriate for your use case. Do not spoof headers to misrepresent your identity where it violates site policy.
- Validate responses by checking status codes and page content. Log the proxy endpoint used so you can debug failures.
- Respect rate limits and terms of service. Rotating proxies are a tool for authorized data collection, not for bypassing access controls.
