Route Windows Apps Through ChangeMyIP SOCKS5 with Proxifier

Add a ChangeMyIP SOCKS5 endpoint to Proxifier on Windows, scope proxification rules to specific applications, force DNS through the proxy, and verify the exit IP.

Windows SOCKS5 Proxifier Privacy/Anonymity

Overview

ChangeMyIP supplies SOCKS5 endpoints on shared and dedicated datacenter IPs as well as residential IPs, spanning 40+ countries, 300+ cities, and 1000+ subnets. Many Windows programs, however, have no proxy settings of their own: desktop scrapers, game launchers, command-line tools, and older utilities will happily ignore your proxy configuration.

Proxifier is a third-party utility that intercepts network traffic on Windows and forwards it to a proxy server you define. Pairing it with a ChangeMyIP SOCKS5 endpoint lets you route exactly the applications you choose through the proxy, while everything else goes out directly.

Proxifier is an independent product. ChangeMyIP does not bundle, license, or support it. If you only need to proxy a web browser, the browser's built-in proxy settings are usually simpler and this guide is not necessary.

Prerequisites

  • A ChangeMyIP subscription (flat monthly billing) that includes at least one SOCKS5-capable proxy.
  • Connection details from your ChangeMyIP account: server address, SOCKS5 port, username, and password.
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11. The same dialogs exist in the macOS build of Proxifier.
  • Proxifier installed. A time-limited trial is offered by the vendor.
  • Administrator rights on the machine, since Proxifier installs a service and intercepts traffic system-wide.

Choose the right protocol first

ChangeMyIP supports several protocols. Match the protocol to what you are proxying, and copy the exact port shown in your account, because each protocol listens on a different port.

Protocol Typical use with Proxifier Notes
SOCKS5 Any TCP application, scrapers, clients that need remote DNS Supported natively by Proxifier; the focus of this guide
HTTP/HTTPS Browsers and tools that speak only HTTP Also supported by Proxifier, but no UDP and hostname handling differs
Shadowsocks / Trojan Requires the matching client application Not handled by Proxifier directly
DNS Resolution-only workloads Not a tunneling protocol for general traffic
WireGuard Whole-device tunneling Do not combine with Proxifier; pick one

Steps

  1. Collect your SOCKS5 connection details. Sign in to your ChangeMyIP account, open your list of purchased proxies, and note the server address, the SOCKS5 port, and the username and password. If you have both datacenter and residential proxies, note which endpoint you want to use first - residential is the better choice when a target site rejects datacenter ranges.

  2. Install Proxifier. Install the vendor package and reboot if the installer requests it, so the Proxifier service starts cleanly. Launch Proxifier afterward and confirm the main window shows it is running.

  3. Add the proxy server. In Proxifier open Profile > Proxy Servers..., click Add, and enter the values from your account:

    Address: <server address from ChangeMyIP>
    Port: <SOCKS5 port from ChangeMyIP>
    Protocol: SOCKS Version 5
    Username: <your ChangeMyIP username>
    Password: <your ChangeMyIP password>

Leave the entry Enabled and save with OK.

  4. Test the entry before going further. Select the new server in the Proxy Servers dialog and click Check. Proxifier reports whether the host answers and whether authentication succeeded. If this test fails, fix the credentials or the port now - nothing downstream will work until it passes.

  5. Force DNS through the proxy. Open Profile > Name Resolution... and select Resolve hostnames through proxy. With SOCKS5 this sends hostnames to the ChangeMyIP endpoint instead of letting Windows resolve them locally, which is what you want when the exit node should decide how a name is resolved.

  6. Create narrow proxification rules. Open Profile > Proxification Rules. Start restrictive so nothing leaks by accident:

    • Set the Default rule's Action to Direct.
    • Click Add and name the rule, for example Scraper-SOCKS5.
    • Under Applications, list only the executables you want proxied, separated by semicolons, for example python.exe; curl.exe.
    • Under Action, choose the ChangeMyIP server you added in step 3.
    • Leave Target hosts as Any unless you want the rule limited to specific domains.
    • Save with OK.
  7. Verify that traffic actually leaves through the proxy. In PowerShell, compare the IP reported with the rule set to Direct against the IP reported with the rule pointing at your ChangeMyIP endpoint:

    # With the rule action set to Direct
    curl.exe -s https://api.ipify.org

    # With the rule action set to the ChangeMyIP SOCKS5 server
    curl.exe -s https://api.ipify.org

The second command should print a ChangeMyIP exit IP rather than your own. The Connections tab in Proxifier shows live sessions and which rule matched each one.

  8. Add more servers for other countries or IP types. ChangeMyIP endpoints cover 40+ countries and 300+ cities. Proxifier selects the server from each rule's Action, so per-country targeting is done by adding one proxy entry per endpoint and pointing the relevant rule at it. This is useful when you want one application to exit from a specific country while everything else stays direct.

  9. Log a working configuration. Once the rules behave correctly, export your profile from Profile > Save Profile As... so you can restore it after a reinstall. Keep credentials out of shared copies of that file.

Rotation, sessions, and IP stability

  • Shared and dedicated datacenter proxies normally keep the same exit IP for the lifetime of the proxy, which suits long-running sessions.
  • Rotating residential endpoints may present a different IP on each new connection. If a site depends on a stable session, confirm the session behaviour of your specific residential plan in your ChangeMyIP account before you build a workflow around it.
  • Because Proxifier holds connections open, a rotating endpoint can look stable for as long as a single connection lives. Restarting the application creates a new connection and possibly a new IP.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Check in Proxy Servers fails Wrong port or wrong protocol selected Confirm you copied the SOCKS5 port, not the HTTP port, and that the protocol is SOCKS Version 5
Authentication rejected Mistyped or outdated credentials Re-copy the username and password from your ChangeMyIP account and re-enter them
IP test still shows your own address Rule does not match the executable Match the exact process name, including any launcher that spawns it, or temporarily set Default to the proxy to confirm the server works
Proxy works but sites show captchas or blocks Datacenter ranges are commonly flagged Switch the rule's action to a residential ChangeMyIP endpoint
Local DNS resolver is still queried Name resolution not proxied Set Profile > Name Resolution to Resolve hostnames through proxy
Throughput is poor Distant city or too many parallel connections Try a different city in your account and reduce concurrency
Everything breaks after connecting a VPN Proxifier and a WireGuard or VPN tunnel competing for routes Disconnect the tunnel, or exclude the proxied applications from it; do not run both stacks at once
Proxifier stops intercepting after a reboot Service failed to start Restart the Proxifier service, or reinstall and reboot

Summary

  • Proxifier lets Windows applications that lack proxy settings use a ChangeMyIP SOCKS5 endpoint.
  • Add the server in Profile > Proxy Servers, test it with Check, and set Name Resolution to resolve through the proxy.
  • Keep the default rule set to Direct and proxy only the executables you name - narrow rules are easier to debug and safer.
  • Verify the exit IP with curl.exe -s https://api.ipify.org before trusting a rule.
  • Use residential endpoints when datacenter IPs are blocked, and add one server entry per country when you need a specific exit location.
